Beyond the Uniform: Saul Monroy’s Journey to Purpose

“Do I want to be sitting in this hole, or do I want to get back up and move forward?”

When U.S. Marine Corps veteran Saul Monroy was deployed to Afghanistan’s North Sangin Valley as a platoon sergeant, an IED blast changed his life in an instant. Hit with 180 pounds of explosives, Saul sustained severe injuries to both legs. After 16 surgeries, medical teams were unable to save his leg, leading to an amputation.

The physical transition was hard, but the mental battle was harder. Going from peak athletic performance to navigating life as an amputee brought Saul to a dark place—a struggle many combat veterans face in silence.

Then came a turning point: learning he was going to be a father. Driven to be the best example possible for his child, Saul chose to move forward and found his way to the USA Patriots.

Reclaiming Brotherhood & Purpose

For Saul, finding the USA Patriots restored the vital military camaraderie that is often lost after leaving service:

  • A Smaller Circle: Transitioning from the military to civilian life can feel isolating, especially within the small community of combat amputees.
  • A New Mission: On the field, veteran athletes reconnect, push physical boundaries, and support one another through shared experiences.
  • Serving Beyond the Uniform: The team’s central focus extends beyond sports to mentoring the next generation.

Impact On and Off the Field

Saul’s passion now lies in giving back through our signature Kids Camp. By pairing combat veterans with children who have amputations or limb differences, the USA Patriots help young campers gain confidence and realize their own limitless potential.

“The main mission for the USA Patriots is being able to impact these kids… to give them a stepping block to keep going up.”
